Stanley (Richard Jenkins), an aging fast-food worker, plans to call it quits after 38 years on the graveyard shift at Oscar’s Chicken and Fish. His last weekend takes a turn while training his replacement, Jevon (Shane Paul McGhie), a talented but stalled young writer whose provocative politics keep landing him in trouble. The men are worlds apart. A high school dropout who has watched life pass by his drive-through window, Stanley proudly details the nuances of the job. Jevon, a columnist who’s too smart to be flipping patties, contends their labor is being exploited. But a flicker of trust sparks during the long overnight hours in a quiet kitchen.

Oscars Logo

We knew a majority of the film would take place in the restaurant, so the logo had to work for all signage, costumes and posters. The creative direction I was given was to create something that would exist in middle America. It had to be a logo that would fit in a low income town. Something that couldn't be too flashy... something that does not attract attention.

We established a color palette based on the location, and I came up with this design.

Director: Youssef Delara

Production Designer: Fernando Valdes

Prop Master: Peter Cordova

Cast: Shane Paul McGhie, Matthew Modine, Michael Hyatt

Michael Trainer is a lawyer at the center of a trial in which a for-profit Foster care agency puts a known sex offender into the same foster home as his young client Jamal, with catastrophic results. Michael, a successful litigator with a long career in protecting corporate clients, has been blinded from recognizing the real damage they can cause. He wants nothing to do with Jamal's case until a Judge forces him to accept it. Initially he sees Jamal, as a thuggish African American youth trying to get a piece of corporate profits. But when Jamal refuses to settle the case for any amount of money, Michael begins his representation in earnest. As their work together reveals the horrifying depth of the corrupt and abusive for-profit Foster care agency, Michael is transformed from reluctant defender to fierce warrior in the battle for justice.

Props created

I was hired by Propmaster Peter Cordova to create many

props for the film. The majority of the work was legal documents used for the case. We created mountains of it, in addition to logos, labels, hotel keys and various elements which made up the Foster Boy world.

My favorite prop however, was the notebook used by the main character. In it, I filled pages on pages of poems, sketches, and notes. I carefully filled it out with sketches inspired from Jamal's life, in addition to direct quotes taken out of the script. The notebook was used and read from directly in the climactic conclusion of the movie. I was very excited to be part of this movie, and I love it's message.

A spoof on Mr Rogers, Mr Neighbor's House is a dark, fun fantasy land with so much fun opportunity for graphics!

The game board below was an especially fun project. I took the basic game board, created by an LA based illustrator, and altered/expanded upon it. I then created the box, all game cards, and created game character pieces using photos of the cast. I was then tasked to print a life-size game piece of the character Miss Lady (see below), so I worked closely with the production designer Justin Lieb to make sure we got the correct size and quality.

We wanted to do a set which looked like Antique Road show, so I get inspired from the shows graphics and created a table wrap, step and repeat, and banners.

Cat album covers

GOLDEN REVENGE was a blast to work on. For this project, many of the props were used for physical gags. For that reason, I had to always consider how many prints were needed and what kind of paper should be used based on the gag.

The cat covers (pictured left), were particularly fun! In this scene, our character had a photography business dressing up cats and making album art. I was tasked to come up with a fun cat themed spin on some classic, iconic albums.

PROPS & SET DECORATION

Grand-Daddy Daycare was my first official union Graphic Artist job. I was so happy to be brought on by Scott H. Campbell! We had an all star cast on this one, so it was a pleasure to see some actors I knew growing up in-person (Danny Trejo!).

A lot of the props were legal documents, so I chose some of the more colorful designs for this site. The Dynamite Dan logo was actually originally designed by Barry Bostwick, so I worked with him personally to make his idea come to life in illustrator. Being a huge Rocky Horror fan, that was a thrill.

A lot of the props were legal documents.
